Lot 205

[English Suffragettes - Set of Six Stanhopes, c. 1920]. Six optical devices called "stanhopes," holding microscopic portrait images of English suffragettes: Emmeline Pankhurst, Sylvia Pankhurst, Christabell Pankhurst, Flora Drummond, Mary Clarke, and Anna Kinney. Each cylindrical device resembes a 1½ in. long miniature telescope made of brass-like metal and a leather sheath. Made in France, which was advanced in lenswork and camera production. The portrait of Sylvia Pankhurst has a shadow across it and the nameplate for Emmeline Pankhurst has slipped. Looking into the small end of one of these "stanhopes" reveals a portrait of one of the pioneers of English suffrage. British women over 30 were given the vote inn 1918. In 1928 women aged 21 and older received full voting rights.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
