Lot 202

[American Suffragettes - Set of Five Stanhopes, c. 1920]. Five optical devices called "stanhopes," holding microscopic portrait images of American suffragettes: Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Carrie Chapman Catt, and Anna Howard Shaw. Each cylindrical device resembes a 1½ in. long miniature telescope made of brass-like metal and a leather sheath. Made in France, which was advanced in lenswork and camera production. Looking into the small end of one of these "stanhopes" reveals a portrait of one of the pioneers of American suffrage. It is hard to believe today that American women were not given the vote until 1920. Here are five of the most important suffragettes who devoted their lives to that end.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500.
