Newfoundland has had a history of considering union with Canada, and rejecting the concept, for almost 100 years. Traditionally, the choice was influenced by Newfoundland's econimic situation. The worse the economy, the more likely was union. Finally, in 1949, despite relative prosperity, union wss approved by 52 % of the population.
