Ismail Pasha (1830-1895) Ottoman viceroy and khedive of Egypt (1863-79). He modernized Cairo and parts of Alexandria and encouraged the Suez Canal project; overextended financially, he was forced to sell Egypt's shares in the Canal to the British; he was dismissed by the Ottoman sultan in 1979, in favor of his son. Rare Photograph Signed "Ismail" on the mount, 14x11½" (photo is 9¾x7¾"). Very good; light age wear and foxing. Photo by Ferretti of Naples, Italy. A note written in Italian on the verso in 1894 states that this photo was given by Ismail to Vittorio Emanuele II, who gave it to the note-writer's father.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,200.
