Taylor, Zachary -- Letter Signed as Colonel Commanding (1784-1850) 12th President of the United States; he served from March 1849 until his death in July 1850.He spent 40 years in the Army, serving in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars, and the Mexican-American War. It was his victories at Monterrey and Buena Vista that paved his way to the White House. Letter signed "Z. Taylor" as "Col Comd" during the Second Seminole War, one page, on lightly ruled paper, 9½ x 7½", Headquarters, 1st Brigade, Army South of the Withlacoochee [Suwanee], Fort Basinger (Fla.), Feb. 21, 1838. Shortly before he was promoted to Brigadier General, Taylor sends returns to Lt. Gen. Chambers at Head Qtrs Army of the South Fla. "Enclosed are the returns [not present] required by you with the exception of Co. "I" 2nd Arty. which will be forwarded as soon as recd. at this office. The reason why they were not furnished in due season, is stated on the…return." One small edge chip, else fine. Estimate $1,000 - 1,500
