Lilioukalani, Queen. Letter written by a secretary for Lili'uokalani showing her anger towards the man who attacked her brother, King Kalakaua in the press, 10 x 6¼ in., c. 1880. In part: "The man who wrote this burlesque was a Dr. Purvis (a part Indian) who was Vice Chamberlain to His Majesty Kalakaua. Purvis being in poor circumstances was glad to get this means to save him from hunger…." Accompanied by two satirical poems, 2 pp. each (one with worm holes but legible), similar to the "Gynbergballads" against Lili'uokalani's brother King Kalakaua, but slandering various members of the King's cabinet and the royal family; one is entitled "The Invitation & The Snub." Edward Purvis was a British army officer who had served in India before moving to the Sandwich Islands for health reasons.
