Washington Irving spent 17 years in Europe, where he served as secretary to the American legation in London and as minister to Spain. This book, written after he returned to the United States in 1932, details his experiences while accompanying the U.S. commissioner on Indian affaiirs on a surveying mission in Indian Territory.
