Taft, William H. -- Typed Letter Signed as Secretary of War (1857-1930) 27th President of the United States (1909-1913) and the tenth Chief Justice of the United States (1921-1930), the only person to have held both offices. He served as Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt from 1904-1908. Typed letter signed "Wm H Taft" as Secretary of War, one page, on War Department letterhead, 8¼ x 5½", Washington, Jan. 18, 1906. To Hon. Timothy L. Woodruff, who has requested a position as Marine Superintendent of Transports for a Captain Derby. Taft replies, "…I am advised by General Aleshire that the position of Marine Superintendent, which was held by Capt. W.E. Nye, deceased, at Newport News, Va., has been discontinued, as the services of a Marine Superintendent are no longer required at that place." Very good; toning, folds, and paper clip mark at upper left. Large signature. Estimate $250 - 350
