Hawthorne, Nathaniel -- Salem Custom House Document Signed (1804-64) American novelist. Document signed "Nathl Hawthorne" as Surveyor for the District of Salem and Beverly and Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Salem, one page, 4¾ x 7¾", 1847. A receipt signed by Hawthorne verifying receipt of payment from James Miller "for Rev boat to J.C. Howard." Supplies listed include marline (a type of rope), twine, paint brushes, copper, etc. Very good; script is somewhat light but Hawthorne's signature at lower left is darker. Estimate Value $500 - UP
