Nixon, Richard -- TLS as Congressman (1913-1994) 37th President of the United States (1969-Aug. 9, 1974, when he resigned from office, the only U.S. president to do so). Typed letter signed "Richard Nixon" as U.S. Representative from California, one page, on official letterhead, 10½ x 8", Washington, July 10, 1950. To Mr. Carrington Cook in Berkeley, thanking him for his "generous comments concerning my part in the Alger Hiss case. It is indeed encouraging to know you feel that my efforts to expose the activities of the communist conspiracy within our government can play some part in arousing the public to the threat to our freedom with which we are confronted…." A copy of a speech, "The Hiss Case," given by Nixon before the House, is included. Fine condition. Nixon's role in breaking the Alger Hiss spy case first brought him to national attention.
