Russian Lacquer Box: Spectacular and Large Console Box of a Russian Folklore Scene Made in Palekh Boasting Stunning Detail. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting. But after the collapse of Imperial Russia, icon painters/artists needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales. Offered is a spectacular example from Palekh of extraordinary beauty and remarkable detail. Lidded box is fully hand painted and resplendent in extensive gold paint highlights that the lid appears to shimmer in the light. As with all the boxes in auction, box has the usual rich red lacquered interior. This piece has been signed by the artist, and on verso, the artist and studio also signed in gold. Fine scrolling surrounds the box not only framing the art of the lid, but surrounding the middle sides of the box. 13 x 10 x 3", this is the second lacquer box of this size we are offering in this auction, completely different art, but from the same folk tale. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
