Russian Lacquer Box: Large and Quite Spectacular Console Box from Palekh. Exceptional Russian lacquer console box from Palekh made of papier mâché, enamel, gold, egg tempera and lacquer. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting. But after the collapse of Imperial Russia, icon painters/artists needed a way to make a living. Thus, the craft of making papier-mâché decorative boxes and panels developed, the items were lacquered and then hand painted by the artists, often with scenes from folk tales. This is one of two lacquer boxes we are offering in auction both measuring 3 x 10 x 13" both having completely different scenes, but the same folk tale. Signed by artist below the elaborate art, the studio in Palekh written in gold letters underneath box, with elaborate hand painted scroll work framing the lid as well as all four sides of the box in gold paint. In mint condition boasting exceptional craftsmanship. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
From the private collection of a Russian gentleman.
