Lot 749

1848 N-40 R3 Repunched 18 EF40+. Slightly sharper but there is a trail of darker toning caused by planchet impurities in the field from the chin down to star 1, a pinprick in the field under star 8, and a small nick on the rim over the U in UNITED. Otherwise this piece is smooth and very attractive. Glossy medium chocolate brown with underlying mint frost peeking through in protected areas. M-LDS, die state b, showing a narrow but clearly defined rim cud break under the 48. A nice example showing the rare intermediate state of the cud break (the later state has this cud reaching up to the dentil roots under the 4).
Estimated Value $100-UP.
