Roman Discus Lamp with Bust of Diana. Italy, c. 175-225 AD. The lamp robust and solidly made, in a orange-tan ware, with remains of a deep red to brown glaze. Lamp's handle fin-like and pierced, the nozzle heart-shaped. Within central discuss, a detailed bust of Diana, the huntress, represented as the moon goddess. Frontal bust dressed in chiton, bow at left shoulder, and lunar crescent behind her, seven stars are in the field around her. Petal border around discus. The lamp used, with strong soot marks at nozzle. Some discreet repairs are evident, with areas of hard calcareous patina. Overall lamp very fine, with pleasant art work. Length: 5". This a better example of a Roman lamp.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
