Lot 716

1848 N-33 R5- NGC graded MS61 Brown. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. No roughness or verdigris, but there are some nicks on the obverse, mainly on the jaw, neck, and bust tip. None of the marks is distracting but there are a few too many to ignore at this sharpness level. A dull diagonal nick on the jaw over the throat and two ticks on the bust tip are good identifying marks. Sharply struck EDS. The die lines at the inner curl are crisp. Our grade is EF40+ sharpness net VF35, tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census. Comes with a great provenance that includes 3 individuals who completed the Sheldon series of large cents, a very exclusive club indeed. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 65. Estimate Value $200 - UP
