Lot 69

1804 C-7 R4 Spiked Chin VF20. Double Struck over Obverse Brockage. At least ten points sharper but there is a significant scrape on the rim at ICA, several tiny pinpricks in the field left of the lower curls, a dull scratch hidden in the hair right of the ribbon, and a couple specks of reddish verdigris at the O in OF. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and free of notable marks. Glossy olive and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. Very rare EDS, Manley state 1.0 without any die cracks on the reverse. This piece was struck two times. The first strike was an obverse brockage and the second strike was normal. The incuse obverse brockage impression from the first strike is located on the reverse of the second strike. The incuse LIBERTY is visible through the denominator, and Ms Liberty's curls show under ATES. The second strike on the obverse was shifted only slightly relative to the first, but clear doubling shows at the throat, forehead, and off the bust tip. A sharp example of an extremely rare type of mint error. This is a very tough die variety; being double struck over an obverse brockage just makes it better. Estimate Value $1,250 - UP
