Peary, Robert E (1856-1920) American explorer who made several expeditions to the Arctic and who claimed to be the first person to reach the North Pole. Autograph telegram signed ("R.E. Peary") on the decorative letterhead of the Everett House, 1p, 11 x 8¼ in., New York, 1 July (18)93. Headed "Important," he writes "The Falcon will sail for Boston at six Sunday afternoon" and inquires if Major and Mrs. Pond will "accept an invitation for the cruise." Later this same year Peary would lead the first of his five expeditions toward the North Pole. Fine; light toning and a contemporary ink smudge to the "R" in the signature. Matted with a portrait of Peary and framed to an overall size of 24¾ x 16¼ in.
