(Jefferson, Thomas) Portrait by Kosciuszko, Engraving by Sokolnicki. Bust portrait of Jefferson, right profile, wearing a laurel crown. Image: 6 1/8 x 5 1/8". Sheet: 13 x 11". Printed below the image: "Thomas Jefferson / A Philosepher [sic] a Patriote and a Friend / Dessiné par son Ami Tadée Kosciuszko. Et Gravé par Mt. Sokolnicki." Fine. General Tadeusz Kosciuszko was a Polish-born patriot who fought in the American Revolution. He and Thomas Jefferson became good friends when Kosciuszko returned to the United States in 1797. Kosciuszko was an amateur artist and he persuaded Jefferson to sit for a profile likeness. Kosciuszko took his watercolor portrait, now lost, to Paris, and had it engraved by Polish nobleman Michel Sokolnicki. Fine. Estimate $400 - 600
