Lot 635

1801. LM-2, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-61. This is a rare and desirable early Draped Bust half dime in Mint State. Precious few survive this nice as virtually all of these circulated, usually into much lower grades before being saved. The obverse shows a sharp strike, particularly on Liberty's hair curls, and this despite a long arcing crack through the left side of the die along the back of Liberty's hair, crossing through the date at 18. For the reverse the surfaces are pleasing with a few light marks noted when carefully studied, and there is a minor planchet flaw caused when the early Philadelphia Mint was rolling out thie planchet, with a small fleck of slag or debris leftover which was rolled into the planchet, somewhat hidden by the shield design. Nice light gold tone with areas of russet gold blended in. Mostly well struck. Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 63, 1 in 67. Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000
