Rare, 1903, Harvard VS Carlisle Official Score Card, Historic Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Collegiate Football Powerhouse, Pop Warner Coach. Rare Harvard VS Carlisle 1903 Official Score Card, Soldiers Field, Cambridge, Mass. October 31,1903. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded in 1879 by an American cavalry officer, Richard Henry Pratt, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. With the best of intentions, the purpose was to facilitate the assimilation of the Native American population into mainstream American society. At Carlisle, Pratt attempted to "Kill the Indian: Save the Man" with students forced to give up their indigenous cultures, languages, religious, spiritual beliefs, and their names which ultimately became quite controversial.

The Carlisle Indians football team was active from 1893-1917 and secured their place in college football history when in 1903 Glenn Scobey Pop Warner was signed as coach The team became a formidable powerhouse competing with area universities and Ivy League schools, their rivals in fact being Harvard Crimson and Dickinson Devils. Jim Thorpe, arguably the greatest all around athlete in the first half of the 20th Century, attended Carlisle between 1907-1911. The book "Go Indians" by Moss Hall is included in this lot and is a fine history of Carlisle and the Great Indian Athletes.

Rare Official Score Card for the Harvard Vs Carlisle game held on Soldiers Field, October 31, 1903. Outstanding condition, with only a thin tan mark on front page. Inside, the game statistics portion are written in very neatly. Score card was printed on medium stock and measures 7¾ x 4½" folded.

Additionally, why this piece is a standout is that it includes a photo of the Carlisle football team with "Pop" Warner clearly visible in back row in white shirt. Also this particular game is when Warner executed the "Hidden Ball Trick", tucking the football under the shirt of his best runner while the rest of the team pretended to be holding the ball. It worked, Carlisle scored a touchdown, but Harvard prevailed, winning 12 to 11. Estimated Value $600 - UP
