Lot 5

1840 N-4 R3- Small Date PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous medium steel and light olive brown with generous traces of mint red remaining visible on the obverse. No spots or stains, just a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a nick on the neck, another on the jaw, a couple trivial ticks in the field off the bust, and two small nicks on the rim at star 9. The reverse is pristine. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b, with narrow but incomplete rim cuds from below the 1 around to star 3. The hub defects below the date are sharp (which sometimes are used to justify calling this an overdate 40/39 variety, which is incorrect). Our grade is MS62+, CC#3 for the variety in the Grellman census. A beautiful cent that comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. Estimated Value $2,500 - UP
