Lot 4873

1927-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely rich golden toning on both sides. Common wisdom has it that many if not most branch mint dates in the 1920s (with the exception of 1923-D) were melted in large numbers in the 1930s, accounting for their scarcity. This is surely true of the rare 1927-S, one of the rarest issues in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles. Of the known certified specimens, approximately two dozen have been graded by PCGS as of this writing (late-April), and smaller same number of higher grades coins have been seen. See below. The vibrant specimen offered in the present lot reveals warm apricot-gold to mustard-gold patina that shifts shades depending on where on the surface it lies; many of the same tints also cover all portions of the reverse. Each side is blended with full frosty luster. What's more, the design elements are sharply struck throughout. A modicum of low profile bagmarks does not affect the appearance in the least. The eye appeal of this lovely S-Mint specimen is "all there" in the idiom of modern American English. Pop 23; 13 finer; 5 in 64; 5 in 65; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 9188) .
Estimated Value $45,000 - 48,000.
