The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans. 1834/1839 Edition, 4 Volumes complete. Published in New York, Philadelphia, and London, containing over 140 engraved portraits and biographies of famous Americans. Each volume is 10 x 7 in., one-quarter calf and marbled board covers, gilt-edged pages. One-quarter spine loss on each volume; Vol. 3 has loose front cover; Vol. 4 front cover is detached. Interiors are clean, with edge toning and some light foxing. Included is a litany of Revolutionary War heroes, as well as orators, statesmen, Naval heroes, jurists, authors, and others. A few of the famous names are: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, Francis Marion, John Adams, John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Daniel Boone, John Paul Jones, etc. Each portrait has a facsimile signature. This set represents a potential money-maker for the person willing to split the books up and offer the prints individually; or the volumes could be beautifully rebound and kept intact. We believe these volumes represent the First Edition of this series, as later editions followed through to the 1850s.
