Lot 430

1937-D. 3 legs. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC. PQ. Nicely toned. A real nice example that should be graded higher. This is one of the most popular die blunders of the 20th Century. Apparently this is what happened back in 1937 at the Denver Mint. Two dies clashed and a younger man at the Mint was told to file down the dies in order to remove the evidence of die clashing, being new to the job, he went a bit heavy handed and actually filed off the bison's front leg in the process from the reverse die! Hence the 3 Legged Buffalo was born as coinage resumed striking with the newly filed reverse die. The 3 Legged coins have been in strong demand ever since they were discovered and are rarely found this nice as most entered circulation and stayed there long before being noticed and saved. In PCGS old green holder (PCGS # 3982) Estimated Value $4,000 - UP

Realized $5,520
