1798 Encyclopedia; Or A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Miscellaneous Literature, Vol XVII. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson. 1st American Edition. 11" x 9" x 3½" thick, with original marble boards, leather corners, and leather gold-stamped title spines and tight binding. Light overall age toning and occasional foxing, but bright and fresh with very clear text. This volume covers the letters "SCO-STR" and has 32 copper-plate illustrations, three of which are fold-outs. A large section on Shipbuilding includes 16 plates, with two fold-outs showing ship design.; another illustration shows a full-page portrait of a complete warship under sail. The section on the Steam Engine has a fold-out of "Watt's Steam Enginre." From the first set of Encyclopedias published in the United States.
