Lot 3977

Austria. Ducat, 1589. Fr-87. 3.34 grams. 23.11 mm. Vienna mint. Rudolph II, 1576-1612. Obv. Three-quarter facing, armored standing monarch with sword in right hand and orb and cross in left. Leg: RU - DOL.II.D.G.R.I - S.A.G.H.B.REX. Reverse: Crowned shield with Order of Golden Fleece. Leg: SLADISLAUS * - HVNR.REX.1589. NGC graded MS-63.

Rudolph, son of the previous Emperor Maximilian II, ruled for 36 years. This relatively long reign allowed Rudolph to consolidate his diverse holdings. Interestingly enough, Rudolph was having a bit of difficulty in Hungary, and the mentioning of St. Ladislaus on the coin indicates his attempt to smooth over his rule there.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,600.

Realized $1,955
