Lot 3779

Brazil. 4000 Reis, 1822/1 (Rio). Fr-99; KM-327.1. Joao VI, 1818-1822. Arms of United Kingdom and value. No mint mark. Reverse: Plain cross in quadrilobe. Bold and clear overdate. Lightly toned and very attractive. NGC graded MS-62.

Brazil was at this time still a territory under the control of Portugal. Joao abdicated in 1821 to assume the rule of Portugal. Pedro, his son, assumed the regency of Brazil, but within one year declared Brazil to be an independent state with himself as Emperor Dom Pedro I. This did not play well in Lisbon.
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200.

Realized $1,265
