Lot 371

1838 N-12 R2. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. CAC. A mate to the previous lot, virtually identical but with a few more minor marks. Lustrous light olive and medium brown with 15% of the planchet showing mint red, mostly on the reverse. The notable marks are a very light nick just right of star 1, a spot of slightly darker toning (not carbon) over the right side of the second 8, a spot of shallow reddish carbon under the left end of the line below CENT, and a line of microscopic planchet flakes (as struck) through the I in UNITED and the leaves below. MDS with microscopic flowlines and die wear but complete dentils around both sides. The doubled die feature on the reverse is obvious under magnification, especially on the outside berries on the left side of the wreath. Our grade is MS63.PCGS population 1; 3 finer in 66. (PCGS # 399518) Value $1,500 - UP
Ex Thomas D. Reynolds (who acquired it from the same source as for the previous lot) 6/9/2006-Nancy & Bryan Collection.
