Lot 368

1836 N-6 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Very attractive lustrous medium brown and chocolate; the obverse with a very subtle woodgrained effect. There are delicate overtones of bluish steel on both sides, especially on the reverse. Very sharply struck and this cent has great eye appeal. It is difficult to find an identifying mark; a shiny scuff in the field over the N in CENT barely qualifies as a mark but it will have to do. MDS with the usual cud break above star 8 plus three radial die cracks on the reverse (the first one through the ribbon tip, the second through the T in UNITED, and the third a very fine one off the stem tip). Called MS62 and CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #37205. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#6. Our grade is MS63. This is the plate coin for the variety (obverse and reverse) in Howard Newcomb's 1940 reference on the cents of 1816-1857 (Plate VIII, obverse 6/7, reverse D). A beautiful cent with an impressive provenance. The Nancy & Bryan Collection provenance is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; none finer in BN at PCGS. (PCGS # 37126) Value $3,250 - UP
