Claudius, AD 41-54. Silver Denarius (3.5g). Mint of Lugdunum (Lyons), AD 46. Laureate head of Claudius facing right. Reverse: DE BRITANN, Triumphal arch, surmounted by equestrian statue between two trophies. RIC 34; RSC 29. Well struck and well centered with an excellent portrait of Claudius. Light antique grey toning. Choice Very Fine.

The arch which commemorated Claudius' conquest of Britain in AD 43, was converted from the Aqua Virgo which carried the aqueduct across the Via Flaminia, Rome's main road to the north (Sear 1830).
