Civil War Draft Substitution--Certificate of Non-Liability After Paying $300. Partly-printed document, 10x8", signed by three members of the Board of Enrollment, Greenfield, Mass., Aug 6, 1863, noting that Mr. N.B. Chapman of Easthampton, Mass has been exempted from conscription for three years by paying $300 for a substitute to take his place. Poor people, of course, could not afford to pay others to fight for them. Some wrinkling and a couple of pinholes at folds. Estimated Value $200 - 300
