Theodosius II, 402-450 AD. Gold Solidus (4.41 g.), Thessalonica mint, c. 424-430(?) AD. Rare. Helmeted three-quarter facing bust, with spear, and shield decorated with horseman and foe. Reverse: Emperor in military attire, holding standard and globus cruciger, star at left; GLOR ORVI - S TERRAR, TESOB in exergue. Boldly struck and lustrous, the reverse art eye-catching. The obverse with interesting looking grafitti, rather resembling a abbreviated religious inscription, perhaps in the manner of CNG 69, lot 1775. A good research piece. Very Fine plus.
