Persian Period. Achaemenid Empire. Xerxes II to Artaxerxes II, ca. 420-375 BCE. Gold Daric (8.4g). Persian king/hero in a kneeling, running stance right, holding a spear and bow; quiver over shoulder. Reverse: Incuse punch. Hendin p. 104, plate 4.1. BMC Arabia p. XXV, 12. Carradice type III-b, A/B. Lustrous and quite choice. Extremely Fine.

The earliest coin mentioned in the Old Testament (numerous times) is the gold daric of the Great Kings of Persia. These gold coins circulated throughout the Persian Empire and the Jews were undoubtedly quite familiar with them during the Babylonian Occupation as well as their return to Palestine during the Second Temple Period.
