Lot 343

Yuan Dynasty. Yuan Zhen Tong Bao, 1295-1296, AE Cash (3.9 g, 22.8 mm). Temple worship coinage. Sharp characters. Light green patina covering both sides. Extremely rare. Very Fine.

Yuan Dynasty was the Chinese part of the Great Mongol Empire. The Yuan emperors in China are also the nominal Great Khan of the Mongols. This coin was issued during the reign of Temur Oljetu Khan, the second Yuan emperor. Yuan was frequently involved in wars and revolts, and coins were always in shortage. Therefore, Yuan government encouraged the usage of paper money. As a result, Yuan coins, except for a handful types, are typically rare and expensive.

Fortunately, most Yuan emperors were devout Buddhists. Special privileges were bestowed to temples and monks, including casting temple tokens and coins. Coin collectors sometimes have to pick these temple coins, which are also rare, as substitutes to complete the series. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
Ex. Dr. Patrick Tan Collection.
