Lot 3328

1909-O $5 Indian. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly untoned. Scarce date. Much original luster present and largely "old gold" in color with warm golden accents on both sides. Examine it once. Examine it a second time. What you will find is delightful, nearly fully struck devices, with just the faintest touch of weakness at the lowest point of the headdress feathers; the all-important mintmark being bold and clear. 1909-O has the lowest mintage in the series: 34,200 pieces struck. Pop 296. (PCGS # 8515) .

With the Indian $5, unlike his predecessors, designer Bela Pratt chose to honor a real American Indian for a change, not some made-up Liberty wearing an incongruous Indian headdress. And because of this, his design helped to propel American coin design into the World Class league.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.
