Lot 3293

Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161. Gold Aureus (7.27 g) minted at Rome, AD 151. Bare-headed bust right of Antoninus Pius with slight drapery over left shoulder. Reverse: Ceres standing right, holding two ears of corn, and to right, Proserpina standing front, head left, holding pomegranate. RIC 199 var (slight drapery over left shoulder); cf. BMC 724; Calicó 1557 (same obverse die). Signs of old cleaning. Portrait in high relief. About Extremely Fine.

It is possible that the specimen in Calicó has both the same dies; certainly they were engraved by the same celator. The photographed Calicó coin is just not quite sharp enough to make a 100% identification possible. This cataloguer, however, would side for the same pair of dies having been used.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
Ex Weil 121 (29 X 1999).

Realized $5,750
