Lot 3259

Great Britain. Pattern Penny, 1797. P-1135. George III (1760-1820). Restrike. By W J Taylor after Kuchler. Struck in bronzed copper. Obverse: Small laureate and draped bust right, wreath of 11 leaves and 3 berries, tie ribband at rear, brooch of 8 jewels on drapery, K incuse on shoulder, within broad raised rim with small incuse legend. Reverse: Britannia seated to left on globe, some extra drapery, trident in right hand, K recut and raised below shield, stylized helmet plume. Some file marks on rim as is consistent with this type. Lightly cleaned. Very Rare.
Distinct evidence of die maker's rotated incuse circular locating marks on obverse, especially above portrait. This may have been the first specimen produced from the die, so exquisite is the quality. Certainly as fine as any known example and a tribute to the engraver's art. Proof.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.
