Story, Joseph (1779-1845) Associate U.S. Supreme Court Justice, known for his historic opinion in Martin versus Hunter's Lessee, which established the power of the federal court to review issues of constitutional law raised in state cases; his decisions helped frame admiralty and prize law. Autograph Letter Signed, Salem (Mass.), August 13, 1816, 1 page, quarto. To Henry A.S. Dearborn (1783-1851), who had served in the Revolutionary War, as a member of Congress (1793-97), as secretary of war (1801-09), and in the War of 1812. In part: "…I received your translation of the French Treatise on Pastel…The translation does equal honor to your judgement industry & patriotism; & entitles you to the warm thanks of all who feel interested in the agricultural & manufacturing establishments sof our country. Real independence is to be acquired only by endeavoring to cultivate within ourselves as far as we can the arts of peace & the arts of war…." More good content. Attached integral leaf has lengthy docket by Dearborn. Written the same year as Story's historic decision, which has been called the keystone of the arch of federal judicial power.
