Lot 3143

Ionia, Herakleia ad Latmon, c. 160 BC. AR Tetradrachm ("Stephanephoros"; 16.87 g). Head right of Athena Parthenos, wearing highly decorated, triple-crested helmet. Reverse: Ethnic above club; below, Nike standing left holding wreath, flanked by two monograms; all within oak wreath. SNG Lockett 2823. Underyling luster is evident. Extremely Fine.

The fact that these large diameter, Hellenistic tetradrachms bear wreaths enclosing distinct reverse types, which are individual as to city-states, causes them to be termed "stephanephoroi". A unifying factor as well is that the obverse edges are not flat, but beveled.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,400.

Realized $1,150
