Large 38 Star Flag. 20-foot-long flag stamped "Patented Apr. 26th 1870 AMERICAN ENSIGN 20-FT." Stars and stripes are stamped with dye; stars are in seven rows of five and one row of three. The date refers to the press-dyeing process patented in 1870; rights were owned by The United States Bunting Company of Lowell, Massachusetts, which produced the first wool bunting made in the U.S. (instead of England). This flag may very well have been flown on a U.S. battleship. Moderate toning and wear to the material, as would be expected from a flag of this age. The 38-star flag was used from 1876, when Colorado became the 38th state to enter the Union, to 1889, when both North and South Dakota became states.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.

Realized $319
