Lot 3122

Attica, Athens, 166-57 BC. AR "New Style" Tetradrachm (16.38 g) struck 139/138 BC, fourth month (delta on amphora). Head right of Athena Parthenos, wearing triple-crested Athenian helmet. Reverse: Owl standing on prostrate amphora; to right, winged Tyche with amphora. Multi-colored toning; Extremely Fine.

Along with the tetradrachms of Parthia and a few other Greek issues, these new style tetradrachms often bear the month of issue. Dating is accomplished from historical records of the particular magistates' names inscribed on the reverse fallen amphora, in this case, magistrates Herakleides, Eukles and Ariston.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Realized $1,035
