Lot 307

1803 S-255 R1 G5. Double Struck. Sharpness F15 but dark and covered with fine porosity. No verdigris or marks. Slightly glossy dark steel. The diameter of this cent is clearly larger than normal thanks to being double struck. The first strike was 20% off center to K-1 on the obverse while the reverse appears to have been struck against another blank planchet 10% off center in a different direction. The second strike was centered but the obverse was pressed into a new blank planchet rather than the obverse die during this strike. They kept trying but never got it right. There may have been even more going on here but the grade and surfaces make that determination impossible. The date is strong and the legends are complete, at least those that made it onto the planchet. A neat error in spite of the ugly surfaces.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

Realized $1,208
