Lot 306

1839 N-5 R2 Booby Head MS63+. Very attractive lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate faded down from mint color with lots of the mellowed mint color showing through in the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse where the faded red is dominant. No spots or stains, only a few minor marks. These include a thin horizontal nick on the nose, a faint planchet lamination just below the 3 in the date, and a thin diagonal scuff over NE in ONE. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields. A beautiful cent, very close to MS64 in our opinion. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20938. Bland says MS65 and CC#3. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS65BN (PCGS label #37237.65/13092006 included, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66 for the variety at PCGS.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
