Lot 3014

Great Britain. Proof copper Penny, 1856. Victoria Young Head. Plain trident. S-3948. Peck-1511 (called "excessively rare"). Cope & Rayner rate it R5, "extremely rare, 5-10 known." An exquisite example of this elusive Proof of Record. The surfaces are gleaming with a luscious chocolate color atop slightly faded mirrors, and showing more than a hint of mint red luster. Every little detail is boldly impressed by multiple Proof strikes. Drop-dead gorgeous, and surely at the very top of the condition census. Super-rare as a commercial or business-strike issue, but in Proof state, and in this splendid state of preservation, it's so rare that the operative word here is "opportunity": let this lot escape you, and how will you ever find its equal? We expect the Spink catalogue value of 1,000 Pounds (roughly $2,000 at cataloguing time) to be easily exceeded by knowing bidders. NGC graded Proof 65 Brown.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
The Cheshire Collection.

Realized $2,300
