Lot 296

1851 N-31 R3+ NGC graded MS64 Brown. Glossy light olive and steel brown with generous peeps of mellowed mint red showing on both sides, especially on the reverse. A sharp cent that looks mint state but there is a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Just a few tiny contact marks including some microscopic pinpricks on the cheek and jaw. MDS, die state b. The spur from star 2 is dull and barely visible and there is a fine die line connecting the left end of the base of the E in ONE to the right top of the N in CENT. Our grade is AU50+, close to AU55. The attribution and COL Ellsworth provenance are noted on the NGC label. NGC population 3; 1 finer in 65. Estimated Value $300 - UP
Ex J. R. Frankenfield, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/17/2001:1661-Dustin Massie 9/11/2004-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection.
