Lot 293

1851 N-27 R5- PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown with underlying faded mint color showing through in the protected areas, mostly on the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless, and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. A tiny horizontal tick or planchet chip in the center of the nose is the best identifying mark, and it is barely visible. LDS, die state d. The point up from the right foot of the T in CENT is nearly gone and the lump on the wreath stem under IT in UNITED is clear. Our grade is MS63+ Choice, close to MS64, and CC#3 behind two marginally finer examples of this tough die variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 67. Estimated Value $1,250 - UP
Ex Henry T. Hettger, 2009 EAC Sale, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 4/18/2009:461 ($1045)-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (lot ticket included).
