Lot 288

1797 Draped Bust Cent. . S-120a, R3. EF-45 Plain Edge. Lustrous light to medium steel brown with tiny splashes of darker olive brown toning sprinkled about the lower part of the reverse. There is a light touch of wear on the obverse highpoints, but the reverse is closer to mint state. The only marks are a faint spot of slightly darker toning in the field left of the hair ribbon and a swipe of microscopic pinpricks in the field close over the bust tip. The dentils just left of the date are softly struck, as are the opposing ones over the second T in STATES. MDS, Breen die state III. Called AU50 by Denis Loring and tied for CC#2. Del Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#5. An attractive and very important cent either way.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 5,000.
Ex 1957 ANA Sale, lot 831-C. Douglas Smith (comes with his distinctive typed envelope) 1980-Jack Beymer-Dick Feingold.
