Lot 283

1851 N-20 R3+ Both 1's Repunched PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints. The obverse has 75% of the bright mint red remaining while the reverse shows mellowed mint color on 60% of that side. No spots or stains. The only marks are a small nick or planchet flake in the dentils under the first 1 in the date, a thin diagonal nick under the outer part of the hair bun, and a shallow low spot (caused by debris on the die) on part of the neck. LDS, die state d (Newcomb’s old #28). A faint trace of the repunching is still visible on the first 1, the tops of the C & E in CENT are connected by crumbling, and there are die cracks on both sides. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#1 honors with two other pieces, but this one shows more mint color. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 64+. Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
