Lot 275

1851 N-12 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Very attractive glossy chocolate and olive brown with underlying frosty faded red covering nearly a third of the planchet. The toning looks natural but we suspect this piece may have been lightly cleaned long ago and retoned. The surfaces are lustrous and show only a few microscopic marks. A small planchet flake in the dentils below the ribbon end (as struck) is the best identifying mark. Nicely struck EDS, die state a, with diagonal die lines covering the field at the date. There is a fine but clearly visible line through the second 1 just below the peak, apparently the base of a misplaced 1. A cent that has great eye appeal in spite of the possible recoloring. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#18 in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; 6 finer: 2 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65+, 2 in 66. Estimated Value $350 - UP
Ex Bowers & Merena 11/18/1994:3554 (as MS64RB)-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (lot ticket included).
