Lot 265

1851 N-4 R1 Repunched 1's PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty uniform medium brown. The surfaces are covered with a thin layer of natural oxidation and there are peeps of dirt nestled into some of the protected areas on both sides. A cent that needs a proper bath to uncover the underlying mint luster. The only mark is a spot of darker toning (not carbon) below EN in CENT. VEDS (very early die state), die state a early. Much of the obverse fields are covered with sharp die lines and the repunching on both of the 1's is crisp. Our grade is AU58+, perhaps better after that bath. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but second finest of the VEDS behind a slightly finer example in the Grellman census. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 4; 4 finer: 3 in 65, 1 in 66. Estimated Value $400 - UP
Ex Bowers & Merena 11/19/1994:3549-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection (lot ticket included).
